Another thing to check if you have auto locking hubs and they aren't engaging. They have a bad habit of the grease drying out in the hub and holding the the engagment arms out. This makes one think there is something major wrong when it's not. Bought a 1 ton 4x4 Dodge of the same vintage in which the flipper said the front axle was messed up. I figured what it was and in 10 minutes it worked fine after cleaning and regreasing.
Always disliked the vacuum systems. Gimmie a lever!
