Set it up like Daryl said in option 1
Set the backlash as close to spec. as possible.
It's the wear pattern your trying to duplicate. Just keep checking with gear paint and ajusting until you match it.
Did you ever check with Bob Stahl for a good take out ring and pinion?
At least the bearings look good I hope.
That's were the money is $450.00+ per set if you can find any.
