More than likely what they did was to place the coals/lid under the engine a few hours before they tried to start it up. It wouldn't do much good otherwise. Also this must have been pre-frostplug heaters or dipstick heaters or perhaps they didn't have electricity where they lived at that time. There's been more than a few vehicles/airplanes caught fire and burned to the ground using that or similar techniques, definitely not recommended. Whenever I was going to go flying the next day I set a interior heater up on top of the airplane engine and kept the engine cover wrapped up pretty tight. It fired right up and always had instant oil pressure. The coldest I have seen up here was -71, but that was years ago.
