He eventually was an aviation mechanic on fighter planes, including Bearcats. He always told me that as tragic as the war was, there were some really amazing things that were invented because of it. Think about it, air travel, good trucks, better food, the list goes on. We can never, ever, take for granted what all those involved, both living and dead, were able to get this country through during some of the worst times. For some reason, I don't see where 9/11/01 has had the same effect. I know I did my part, and I am more than willing to do more if needed. But when I saw a reporter ask alot of young people that wanted to help if they would go to war, they balked and said "oh no, I can't do that, anything else, sure, but not that" The reporter asked about 12 youngsters that were more than qualified for the draft, and they all said the same thing. Dad wasn't drafted, he volunteered as did all his buddies in our little town. Quite a few didn't come back. I signed up for the draft...like we are supposed to. Never got called, but I sure spent enough time up at the pile to know that if I was called (to old at the time, but never the less)I wouldn't have hesitated one minute to pack my bag. I got married 10 days later....thanks for letting me speak here. I know Dad is proud...he got up a few times with those guys, said it was one of the scariest experiences of his life, and changed him forever....he never let us forget...
