Yes, this is much more common than people realize. Everyone I know knows someone who has been through this. And most every story ends with "and she's fine now".
Thankfully modern medicine is so advanced in our time.
Thanks to everyone for your replies. Since I'm outspoken and not very shy I've assigned myself the responsibility to be a voice of awareness and to tell everyone this is a battle that can be won if detected soon enough.
