Not to sound like a smart a$$, but they make and sell a lot of things that aren't right. But you probably are right on the occasional use. I used to use my winch 2 or 3 times each month or more, getting firewood. Now I have 5 trucks with winches and hardly ever use any of them. You might still be able to find the bronze gear at a better price. I will watch out for one for you.
The little gear box, is it a Braden unit? I have one myself that fits that description. If I remember correctly, you can even change the speed with a little lever on it. Here is a picture of the one I have.
