It doesn't have a data plate on it, and the mounting is pretty hacked/welded up, but it generally looks like an MU2. I can see from the parts diagram that what I thought was a round pin through the shaft within the gear is actually the rounded ends of the two shaft keys. I suspect my old gear will slide off, since it's worn down to almost nothing, but the new one won't go on unless I take out the worm, which probably means removing the winch from the truck. Sounds like it's time to dig into it.
The guy at the Brown Bearing said a speed-sleeve would not work in a bearing and I should turn the shaft down smooth, and the bushing should be hard bronze not oillite. If I have to tear it all down anyway, I guess it's time to replace all the bearings and seals while I'm in there. Today's a good sunny day, so if I get it out today, it'll be a good shop project for a rainy day.
The truck's kind of stuck anyway because one of my insanely weather-checked 1952 tires blew a big chunk out of its dried up tread and went flat and the only spare I have here in town is bald. I think I have some good 16" tires on a container dolly over at my cabin, but they're probably snowed in until spring. They might just be 7.50-16s, though, in which case I'll take another marginal tire off a parts truck. This truck's not worth buying new tires for.
