In my experience with a WC-51 & 230 engines, the modern 'stat will allow too much coolant flow . My engine always ran way too cold. This has alos happened with several friends with the same engine/truck. I also found it was important to install the upper thermastat gasket ( looks like a big o-ring) on the top of the thermostat as well.
