On all my Flathead dodges I run the stock type Tstat. once i tried to run a modern style wihtout the upper byspass block you mention and when the radiator was topped off the engine woudl heat up enough to push a bit of water right out the top of the radiator just for about 1 second then it would be fine. But! I like to run with windshield down or open in hard cabs so the idea of hot coolant in my face was not appealing. I switched that one back to stock style and never had a problem after that. I coudl have run my coolant level lower but I can run it higher with the stock Tstat.
