They came from the factory with 250' of 7/16" (yes it fits when wound correctly).
The end that attaches to the drum should be cut cleanly. It can be brazed or soldered to keep it from fraying, but there is no room for any additional terminating part. The same goes for the chain end. This is best cut cleanly and left to be brazed or soldered if you are going to use clamps. Or - have it formed into an eye and factory swedged.
