You just thread the thimble to get it around the chain pear link. Then clamp it back to shape. Weave a flemish eye around, and tight to, the thimble. Tighten the clamp partially on the cable, slide it up close to the thimble, and tighten fully.
I would go into detail on creating a flemish eye but it would require photos to really describe the process correctly. I think there are good instructions online somewhere. It does require practice, a good quality, securely anchored, large bench vice, 24-inch pipe wrenches or large open ended wrenches, practice, a BFH, good leather gloves, sizing wire, and practice.
