Borax is completely different. Washing soda is sodium carbonate, and borax is sodium tetraborate. I would have to ask my chemist friend, but I'm pretty sure borax is a very weak alkali, if it's alkaline at all. The proof would be in trying it, though. I would try it on something I didn't care about first, because if it's not alkaline enough, the process may end up eating the work piece.
