Problem is diesels are more expensive and heavier than a gasoline engine. Add in the extra weight, complexity, and expense of the eletric powertrain and it gets even harder to justify the extra price vs the weight and complexity.
I like the concept too but it's just not cheap enough to sell against the gasoline versions for probably a small gain in mileage.
