The modern one looks like a big 'C' clamp. It works well on flat heads too. The old flat head specific one looks like a pair of vise grips, or may have a nob on the end. They work by straddling the lifter with one c-shaped jaw, the spring cap with the other, and then spread, pushing the spring upward.

Either tool, be sure not to lose the spring locks (more c shaped gismos), the loss will delay the re-assembly. Maybe a tool-loaner will donate some spates? Oh, intakes are different from exhausts, and keep the valves in order, they may have different size stems.

A trick to re-installing the locks in-chassis is to solder a piece of wire to each one. Use the wire as a handle to get the locks into place before releasing the compressor, then break the solder joint off. Only solder to the big flat end of the lock.

If pulling the cam in an engine that is up right, use a dozen spring clothes pins to hold the lifters up.
