I visited my Ford Tractor friend, brought home an Elenco parts catalog, and learned a little more about the conversions.

He has three of these converted Ford tractors, and has owned several more over the years. One of his restored tractors has a complete Dodge military axle with a removable cover plate, and the small 8-3/4" third member (I did not ask about the ratio inside). Another restored tractor has a much heavier Elenco axle with Dodge steering knuckles, Budd wheels, Detroit driveline, and the large 9-1/2" third member (I also did not ask about the ratio inside of that one).

What he is starting restoration on now has the heavy Elenco axle with Dodge steering knuckles, hubs, Budd wheels, and Tracta Joints. Someone has incorrectly installed an earlier 8-3/4" 3rd member with 4.89:1 ratio. The driveline has also been cobbled up with Spicer parts. I am also concerned that the axles may not have a common axis, creating a binding effect at the side gears and splines. The tractor jumps around quite a bit when driven. There is a lot of binding in the front end but the tracta joints look fine, as well as the side gears and pinions in the differential.

Once we compare and get an idea on prices, he will either:

A) replace the incorrect small 3rd member with a complete 9-1/2" large unit with 5.83:1 gearing and then build a new driveline - or -

B) replace only the 4.89:1 gearing with 5.83:1, keeping the smaller 3rd member.

So, I am looking for prices on a used large 9-1/2" third member, complete with good bearings and 5.83:1 ratio. Also looking for price on a used small 8-3/4" matched set ring and pinion gear.

I will pass along information as I receive it.

Thanks to everyone so far, and sorry about the initial confusion.

Junior
