The only foot starter I had problems with was in a 1/2t open cab WC. The old frame was nicely loosened up, lots of flex. No locking diffs needed, you couldn't get one wheel off the ground no matter the terrain.
Crossing a small creek one day, the flex bound both the clutch and starter pedals. Clutch would stick down, pull it up slowly with a toe under the pedal. As it grabbed, truck would lurch forward, untwisting the frame and cab, clutch would pop up the rest of the way, truck would stall. Shift to neutral, bring the hand crank out into the knee deep water, yank-start the engine, get back in, push the clutch pedal down, where it would stick, pull it up slowly with a toe under the pedal, repeat as necessary....
Finally, put it in reverse, bend down enough to use my hand to pull the pedal up, giving me more control. Bang my head on the dash as the clutch engaged, but back out of the creek.
And that is why the later trucks did not have the start pedal pinned to the starter.
