Just before noon today, a friend and fellow PW owner showed me pictures someone sent of a WDX being unloaded from a tractor trailer at one of the local Bob Evans restaraunts. We made a quick call and learned that the truck and the new owner were still there.
I jumped in the car a drove over to meet the new owner, Frank Rossitto. Turns out he bought the truck from Herb Hobie in Oregon. I bought my first truck from Herb in 1994. The prices have gone up quite a bit since I bought mine!
The truck started up and ran good, but the master cylinder was empty. It's a 1949 model with first series bed with mostly original wood and a decent body. By the way, Frank told me he was born in 1949 also. He got himself the truck for his 60th birthday.
I helped Frank fill up the MC and then followed him across town on his maiden voyage in a PW to his house (no plates, and poor brakes - uuggghhh). Frank lost what was left of the brakes on the way, and had a few near run-ins with noon-hour traffic at a few intersections. Scary stuff.
We talked for a bit as Frank recovered from his experience and I took him back to get his daily driver. I happened to have an issue of the PWA that I shared with him on the way. I told Frank how wonderful the hobby is, how I've learned so much from so many of you, and how I've made so many life-long friends through our love of these old trucks. I invited Frank to our next rally here in Morgantown. When he is ready, I will help him go through the brakes on his new old truck.
It's a small world.
