Frosty, I had the same issue with my cummins water sending unit. I went to NAPA and found an adapter that screws into the block. The sending unit will bottom out in the adapter and seal.
Beginning to drive my '61 some. Still sorting out sending units for the speedo and tach. Will hopefully finish the wiring this afternoon.
