My truck when I gat it 10 years ago:
Noise is about the same in all gears. When I give it throttle the growling starts under a load and when you get up to a good road speed where it not working as hard it almost disappears. I try to keep the oil level up to the filler hole on the side of the transmission case and i am using 85/90w Valvoline gear oil. When I got the truck 10 years ago and started going through and changing fluids, I took the drain plug out of the transmission thinking there would be old oil in it. when i did nothing came out! I put my finger in the drain hole and the transmission was dusty in side, so there had been no gear lube in it for many decades I would assume. Filled it up and the gaskets were basically not there and leaks like crazy. The previous owner did absolutely no maintenance on her.
