Robert, I'm in the same boat you are, it is also my first attempt at body and paint. I find the body work very enjoyable. I do believe some good comments have been made on this post. My truck will never be perfect but the fun part for me is doing the best I can. I think Paul -NY has a very proven method of painting. Do be careful in sanding and painting to protect your lungs. In Orlando PPG offers a two day paint and body hands on course for $200, I believe that will provide the foundation and knowledge to complete the job in a respectable manner.
