The proper way to jig up an axle housing is with a stout rod long enough to reach from end to end inside the axle housing. Place two machined pucks into the tube ends & two into the carrier center section/third member. These pucks are internally sized to fit the alignment bars OD. Externally the pucks are sized to fit the axle tube ID & the carriers ID. With the pucks in place slide the alignment rod into the end of one axle tube, carefully slide it through the center section puck & then on out the other axle tube. Draw the section together & weld. Below is a link to a good forum page that will give you a visual. This guy used a hollow tube for the alignment bar. A hollow pipe might be ok for lower speed 4x4 applications, but for high speed/ drag race parts a solid rod offers less chance of deflection during component alignment.
