Based on what I learned from David's response:
The resistor and coil together are designed for 12-14 volts steady state. The coil alone is probable designed for a steady state voltage of the 8-10 volt range, and during the start sequence you bypass the resistor to send the low cranking voltage to the coil to give enough spark to start.
I run a Super Coil on my M, as I did on my 79 Dodge Magnum (Car not Motor), and it requires a higher resistor than a stock coil. If you run it at the 12-14 volts too long will burn it out.
