If you can protect the inside the weep holes are good insurance, though you would need to make sure they stay clear. They would have the additional advantage of allowing any water to leak out if you got a rust hole in the glass channel as well.

I was wondering if anyone ever thought about pumping RTV or some similar sealant into that cavity and just filling it solid.
