I remember a friend's dad did this to a Toyota Celica back in the early '80s except his double gasket held the oil until he was out on the road. Thus not much of a mess on the drive but he hurt the engine. I don't recall all the details but this fellow was not a mechanic. Changing the oil was near his limit of mechanical interaction with cars as far as I know. What exactly resulted in the engine I don't know but he was not a 'happy camper'.
