I worked on mine with the engine removed, I didn't find the problem until after I had pulled the engine. I wasn't sure if there was a quick test when shopping for a first gen truck. I should have also noted that I don't think that the thrust bearing failure is common until fairly high milage. I pulled my engine from a bread van with 459K on the odo, the engine is a retrofit so I don't know how much is on the diesel but I bet the gas engine didn't last much longer than 200K. Ya know in fact after looking at thrust bearings and giving thought to the forces when applying the clutch I am even more careful not to engage the clutch more than necassary and I never start my truck with the clutch depressed. I haven't yet but I am planning on disabling the clutch start interlock on my tow rig also.
