Timing. My oil pump drive was set up in the wrong place when the engine was rebuilt. I could not adv the dist enough w/o it making contact with the starter and swapping the plugs 1 post ahead was too much. I needed a hand primer to start it usually. I popped the oil pump off, rotated the drive 1 camshaft gear tooth counterclockwise, reinstalled it and the dist - runs great and starts w/o need for primer. I also lost the need to keep the choke 1/4" on to get throttle response.
