The original system when installed meant that you could not use a pintle hitch. The hitch mounted over the hole/holes for the PTO.
That being said you could I guess put a rear pto anywhere you like.
Don't believe there is a sheer pin anywhere in the rear pto shaft. I may be wrong,there us a carrier bearing to support and change the direction of the shaft.
