So the cap has to shear the pin lengthwise if it is turned.
Plus, taper pins go into tapered holes, which are made by drilling a straight hole, then using a taper reamer. That way, the pin fits the hole and won't fall out later.
Those gear teeth are pretty worn. Note how they have "full contact"- the wear pattern extend all the way to the heel and toe of the tooth. The means the pinion is contacting the edge of the tooth. Probably a bit whiney. Could be more serviceable in the opposing axle- swap it, and it will contact the fresh side of the teeth, and only use the worn side in reverse.
