We went up there in a 1965 Series II Land Rover, and my dad had to adjust the idle mixture to keep the engine running at those altitudes. I remember having to back up some of the switchbacks because there wasn't enough room to turn the vehicle.
There was a road over to Teluride called the "Black Bear Road", and it had a reputation as a real killer, people supposedly died every year on it. My dad wants to go on it, but mom vetoed that plan. Even as a kid, I knew it was supposed to be dangerous. I think some country singer made a song about it.
