If gaskets require sealer then they would need it on both sides. IMHO they don`t need it at all especially on a t/stat hsg that you may be removing twice a year. I little grease will hold it in position for assembly; I used to curse the dude before me that cemented everything together,, thus the chisel marks Copey mentions
