Not sure why it worked well but I have had great luck with soaking the carbon on carboned heads with paint remover and then presure washing them. They came clean with out any scraping after 2 or three applications.
I was always worried about removing carbon with the head "on". It all has to go by a valve. Does the valve suffer? Most of that carbon is hard.
