My '54 had power assisted steering using a setup similar to some of the big Dodge trucks. The power was applied to the steering linkage after the stock steering box.
The PS pump was mounted at the front of the 6 cyl engine block. A spool valve was inserted in the drag link. The spool valve controlled the hydraulic cylinder which was anchored to the axle housing and the piston moved the tie rod.
