Hi Tom.
I have always heard that the reason for the two gears in a winch being of different materials was to reduce stress while winding in under a load. I'm just repeating what I have heard. :) It makes some sense, due to the tremendous pressure that must exist while winding that shiny stainless steel cable in all nice and neat and tight. :)
