I'll just add another anecdote of how water/coolant in the exhaust will do this for a surprisingly long time. This happened to me on my '55 Chieftain. I thought I had a blown head gasket but it went away. I then investigated and found a drip from a heater core had been dripping right on the driver's side manifold/pipe joint. Some of this coolant made it's way into the pipe. I was surprised at how long it took to completely stop the sweet white smoke.
