look for a combination pintle / hitch ball. they make them with a bolt pattern that will bolt right into the rear cross member without mods. i did this on my m37 to tow a boat with a 2 5/16 ball. the trick is to have a steel spacer made to space the pintle away from the crossmember a bit to clear the bottom of the crossmember. 1/2 steel should be good. you can always bolt the stock pintle back on.
