What Kevin noted is pretty amazing. Just like RR Maint of Way repair. Example - Tie replacement. All mechanized today. Machine pulls the spikes put, moves the tie plates, moves bad tie out the side, insert new tie and tie plate, respikes 8 spikes, all automatic. Used to be all manually done. Those ties are heavy.
