I pour my waste oil (engine and gear) in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. When the bucket's got 4 gallons or so in it, I let it sit for several months and then pour it slowly into the fuel tank, stopping when there's a gallon or so left, or there's any sign of dirt or water. The M35s have 3 fuel filters so I figure the filters can handle any fine suspended particles. The remaining oil and sludge gets used to help burn slash piles. There's always a lot of water and gunk in the bottom of the bucket, so I think it's important to let it settle for a good long time. It's easy enough to add more buckets if needed, so the old ones can settle thoroughly. I've heard that fleet operators often run up to 10% filtered used lube oil in modern diesel engines with no ill effects and no adjustments needed. There are even special filtration machines available for the big shops.
