I've never understood it myself Cope...maybe we have better brake material up here because my 46 WDX would sure lock up all four 20" Michelin radials without any great effort with no hydrovac.
I guess the amount of pedal pressure you had to apply was certainly more than in a modern vehicle but no worse than any other 70's truck with drums. My 1960 W500 has drums & it will launch you out the front window when applied...so other than brake fade & regular brake adjustments...I just don't see the need for a disc installation??
If you can't lock the brakes easily with bias ply 36" tires....there's something very, very wrong with your brakes.
