All the reasons named below probably contributed. But after steel station wagons started to become available in the early 50s, the woody market died out pretty quickly.

Woodies had been made for many years to fill the void of no station wagon availability. It was probalby cheaper for the companies to just provide chassis to the woody buildiers than to make steel station wagons. Ford however did build woodies..

After the war, cars were in short supply. Those who needed a station wagon would often supply a car to the woody companies who cut it up and put the woody body on it.

And has been mentioned, some of the pricey cars like Packards were probably made as transportation at estates.

Some b odies were put on truck chassis and used as school buses. Some like my PW were shipped to the Middle East because of the 4 wd capabillity with seating for 11.

In summary, I think they filled many niche markets that were later filled by steel station wagons.

And I think of my own as an experiment, the first SUV!
