Maybe somebody started a rumor that Obama's going to ban DIY greasing. Sounds about like what happened to ammunition.
The place I go to for oil and grease still has quite a variety and the price hadn't jumped yet as of last year. Maybe you need to find a petroleum dealer and not just an auto parts store. Another advantage of a petroleum dealer is they can dispense lube oils into your own buckets from their big tanks and save you $5 a bucket or so.
