I have a 1.5 watt (~100 ma) on my old Gravley tractor. Seems to work. At 100 ma something less than half the time, do not worry about overcharging.
The more you use the batteries, the higher the charge level you'll need to maintain them. Overcharging can be an issue with higher outputs. One scheme I saw was to dump the excess power into a hot water heating element in a barrel for hot water (this was for small windmills made from alternators).
