Hi Vaughn,
I was running a J12Y. I spoke with the guy who owns the local parts store and he looked up the engine. His book calls for either J8, J12Y, J14Y or J18Y. So, I am toward the lower end of the heat range of plugs recommended for this engine.
His thought was that too hot a plug would be more inclined to damage the engine than to self destruct and that it was probably a defective plug.
