You can buy an extender to move the PTO out about 1.5" from the transmission. That is about all the spacing you would need to get the clearance necessary for the winch driveshaft.
When I did my conversion, I was on such a limited budget, I couldn't afford the spacer. Another option is to fabricate a gear and chain drive for the winch shaft.
One might also consider u-joints in the driveshaft.
