Shimming is a must if anything its better to shim a little loose then a little to tight . I've never used a dial indicator to set the backlash on the PTO's that I've installed. I put on enough shims (gaskets) until I can feel a slight click between the pto idler gear & the pto gear(countershaft) on the transmission while wiggling (Hi tech word) pto driveshaft back & forth. Removing other trans pto cover(If equipt) will give you a better feel for it. Tighten down at least two of the pto bolts before checking backlash. Bill
