M37 winch shear-pin material?

I checked the shear-pin on my winch(braden)and found it to be a 5/16 x 2 1/2 bolt.from 3 different people I got 3 different answers as to what material they are supposed to be.So what is the proper material and size.all my manual states is 9/32 x 2 5/8.but not what it's made of....Pat
