While snomobiling in northern Minnesota yesterday, I came
across and interesting MV. It's an aluminum chassis
gun platform with rubber belt tracks similar to
an earlyn snomobile. Each track was two continous
rubber belts connected with steel cleats. It was front
engine/front drive with rubber drive sprockets!
The suspension utilized automotive road-type wheels
and tires on torsion axles.
The open cockpit featured a steering wheel instead
of levers, and there was a large gun mount fitted
to the center of the vehicle.
After I had looked the at the vehicle, I came across
the fellow who owned it. He said it was a Korean
war era M-56. He called it a tank. He said it mounted
a 90mm gun - I would guess a recoiless rifle of some
sort. He also said he'd owned it for 20 years, had
been asked to sell it many times, and had had it
running just a couple of years ago. He also said it
was gas, not diesel powered.
From the looks of it, that's questionable, as it
appeared to be in pretty rough shape.
Can anyone offer any info on this vehicle? What is
it? How many? When was it used? Etc.
Thanks, look forward to your comments
