the timing gear is on the oil pump in your engine! Sounds like it's a tooth out, easy to do when reassembling. You need to back out oil pump and start over. To proof timing, bring engine up to tdc # 1 cylinder, on the compression stroke. (both valves shut) Timing mark should just line up with indicator line. Here, insert oil pump so that slot for distributor drive is facing right way. (rotor should just be approaching the stud for #1 plug) Watch it tho, drive gear for distributor is helical, and pump will turn when pressing it in. Slot must be aligned correctly with pump bottomed in mounting hole. Hope this helps!
