Am in process of rebuilding front end on 51 B3-pw. Have
differential rebuilt and am doing settings on pinion
bearing preloads. Since I did not replace these bearings
the manual says to set preload at 35-70 inch-pounds of
torque. I did not think that this was very much but as
I decrease the thickness of the bearing spacer, and
continue to check torque with inch-pound torque wrench,it
appears to me that the pinion will have a fairly stiff
rotational movement at this setting. Is this what I
want? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am
intent on learning how to do this. I do have extra r-p
sets but would like to get it right the first time.
