It really sounds to me like your alternator IS NOT the problem. Regardless of what the alternator is doing, you should have lights as long as the battery is holding a charge, unless:
1) A fuse failed
2) A circuit breaker tripped
3) A wire burned/broke
4) A switch burned/broke
5) A connection burned/came loose
6) A short developed
Personally, I would do everything I could to assure that it was not one of these things that happened before having anyone tear into the alternator.
