Most people wouldn't use them, and even if you're trying to be authentic, some trucks had them and some didn't, so it's okay to leave it off. I'm probably in the minority by having enough 24 volt trucks and gensets to make the slave plug a useful thing. It's especially good with the MEP gensets because they only need their battery for starting. They have a magneto for the ignition. Theoretically, you can start them with a pull rope, but I've never had one in good enough shape to start that way. The 4HN battery they use is almost unobtainable and ridiculously expensive. It's easier to just drive a truck up to it, plug in the slave cable, and crank away.
